On Sunday evening, April 9, 2017, the Council reviewed a recommendation from the Call Committee for the position of Senior Pastor. The Council, after meeting the candidate and in consultation with the Call Committee and the pastors, now recommends that North Heights Lutheran Church extend a call to Pastor T. J. Anderson to fill the position of Senior Pastor.
TJ was born in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, to Mary and Doug Anderson. He is the fourth of five brothers. While growing up, Thomas John became known as TJ. TJ and his wife, Susie, have been married for 34 years. They have one daughter (Brittany) and as of August 2016 a son-in-law (Matt Timm), both of whom work and volunteer in ministry settings. TJ and Susie have lived a mission focus that has directed their lives, “leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.” They have had the opportunity to walk with many people as they have become believers and followers of Jesus. They love to travel, play games with family and friends, and read. TJ’s personal hobbies include waterskiing, biking and snowboarding.
He is passionate about preaching the gospel and helping people become disciples of Jesus Christ. He believes that every believer in Jesus is invited by Jesus to continually grow in their faith and bring the light, hope and love of God to the world around them.
For more than 30 years, TJ has worked with the people of God across the country and is committed to help congregations become more effective in reaching out to a world that is in desperate need of Jesus. TJ has a variety of experiences serving large, multi-dimensional and multi-site churches. He previously served in the following congregations: ALC in Windom, MN; Good Shepherd in Sandy, UT; Abiding Savior in Tempe, AZ; Zion in Anoka, MN; St. Andrew’s in Mahtomedi, MN; Trinity in Stillwater, MN; Calvary in Golden Valley, MN; and UALC in Columbus, OH.
Missions are important to TJ and Susie. They are committed to both local and international missions that are impacting and growing the kingdom of God. They are also committed to encouraging others to become involved in missions.
Domestically, TJ helped start a food shelf and clothing center and partnered with cities, schools, health care and business organizations to develop healthy community initiatives. Internationally, he worked with missions around the world to help build a hospital in Guatemala, a home for special needs children in Jamaica, a bible school in Slovakia and a Christian school in Tanzania. TJ also had the opportunity to work with church leaders in Australia and Estonia to encourage organic leadership growth and disciple-making.
TJ and Susie are excited to be part of North Heights and to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
This recommendation follows the Call Committee’s work over the past six months. During that time, they considered more than 43 applications, conducted seven first interviews and three second interviews. On Sunday evening the pastors, their wives, Call Committee and Council met with T. J. Anderson and his wife over dinner and discussion. Following that time, we were unanimous in the decision to place his name before the members of North Heights for Senior Pastor.
We have invited Pastor Anderson to deliver the message at a joint service on Sunday, April 23, 9am at Arden Hills, followed by a reception in the Great Hall. This will provide everyone an opportunity to hear and meet him and his wife, Susie.
Immediately following the service on April 23, we will announce the date and time of a Special Meeting for the purpose of voting to extend a call to T. J. Anderson as the next Senior Pastor of North Heights. This is a time of thanksgiving and great anticipation as we begin a new chapter. May the Lord continue to bless North Heights and provide wisdom to this body.
1 Corinthians 2:9–10 However, as it is written: “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
